  • Washington, D.C. - Real Estate

Located in the District of Columbia, the city of Washington is the capital of the United States, and has an urban population of 563,384, according to a 2004 estimate. Its sprawling metropolitan area occupies parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, and is home to 4,796,183 residents.

Real estate prices in the area have increased substantially in the past few years, with growth of 20.6% in 2005 alone. This brings the median cost of a single family dwelling to $432,900, or more than twice the national average.

Washington is one of the most expensive metropolitan areas in the eastern United States, and is a virtually unattainable destination for most low income homebuyers. Some established homeowners, however, can still attain an affordable deal by scouting out motivated sellers, foreclosed properties, and other discount buying opportunities.
